Snow foam is a contactless method of washing your car and it’s designed to be a pre-wash solution that loosens dirt, grime and other debris. As you can see in the image above, that’s me using it upon a Volkswagen Golf GTi and all that’s needed is a pressure washer, lance and snow foam solution of your choice.
If you want to lean how to use snow foam, the below steps walk you through each stage with pictures taken whilst snow foaming my very own car.
How To Use Snow Foam
1. Position The Car
Before you even begin to snow foam your car, you’ll want to park it in a shaded area (if its sunny). The reason for this is due to the fact most snow foam formulas don’t work well on hot surfaces. If it’s left to dry upon the car, not only will the snow foam not work as expected but it will also leave soap stains upon the paintwork.
You also want to position your car pressure washer so that the hose reaches all four corners of your car. There is nothing more frustrating than needing to reposition the pressure washer each time you move around the car.
2. Setup The Lance & Mix The Snow Foam
For this particular example of how to use snow foam, we are using one of the best rated snow foams, which is by the Pro-Kleen brand. This unique formula turns the car pink with a very thick layer of foam (depending upon the lance setup). It also provides a pleasant strawberry milkshake smell as the layer of foam sits on the car.
Depending upon the formula you use will determine how much snow foam you need to pour into the lance. Therefore, after reading the concentrate instructions on the bottle, pour in the required amount into the lance and then fill it up with hot water. The easiest way of doing this is to slowly pour hot water from a kettle/container because this will stop the formula bubbling in the lance as it mixes.
You can then adjust the spray pattern and thickness using the nozzles on the lance.
3. Begin To Use The Snow Foam
Now that you are all setup, it’s time for the fun part. To begin to use snow foam, start from the top to the bottom and spray an even layer of foam onto the car. Whilst spraying the car, don’t forget about the wheels, wheel arches and around the lower areas of the car (exhaust, front and rear splitters).
Whilst you are going around spraying your car, ensure you regularly check the level of snow foam left in the lance. You don’t want it to run out midway through snow foaming your car.
4. Let The Snow Foam Get To Work
Once you have sprayed an even layer of snow foam over the entire car, you need to allow it to get to work, which can take several minutes. During this time, it’s the perfect opportunity to get those all important action shots of the snow foam working its magic. Below are some before and after pictures during the “dwell” time and as you can see, we proceeded to the next step before it started to dry on the car.
5. Rinse Clear
To finish up, simply rinse all of the foam away from the car using the pressure washer. You want to pay particular attention to areas that can hold water and foam such as the bonnet/bottom of the windscreen and the wing mirrors.
Watch Us Use Snow Foam
We love to use snow foam and it’s the best way to prepare your car before you wash it “normally” using car shampoo. If you follow us on Instagram, you will notice that we regularly post photos and videos of us snow foaming cars.
Below is one of our favourite posts that we filmed which shows us spraying snow foam onto the car and the satisfying sound of it dripping off the car.
Choosing The Lance
As well as the snow foam solution itself, the lance plays just as important role when it comes to snow foaming your car. There are hundreds of snow foam lances available on the market but you will want to purchase one that’s suitable for your particular pressure washer. The connectors vary between lances, which means they aren’t universal. For this particular example, we used snow foam with a Karcher K4 but the lance is universal across all of the Karcher range.
As you can see from our guide on how to use snow foam, it’s very straightforward and great fun at the same time. Although it’s an added part of your car cleaning routine, the benefits make it worth your time using snow foam. Not only does it make it easier to clean your car with shampoo, it also reduces the chances of scratching your car as you wash it.
